September 2006
Holiday Rambler Chapter 400 Rally at Copake NY.
We spent two weeks at Farragut visiting with family and friends.
Monday September 18th we traveled to Corning NY where we stayed at Fernbaugh Family Campground.
Tuesday we went to the Corning Glass Museum. It had been a long time since we were there and it is much nicer than I remembered it. We had dinner in town.
Wednesday September 20th we left Corning and traveled east to Copake NY and Camp Waubeeka Family Campground. This is where Chapter 400 Holiday Ramblers is having their fall rally. Copake is located in southeast NY close to the Massachusetts border.
Thursday we cleaned the motorhome and car and in the evening we went over to Great Barrington MA and had dinner with three other couples who were also early arrivals at the rally.
Friday through Sunday we toured around the area sightseeing. This is a very nice area, mostly farm land with small towns. The largest towns within thirty miles are Hudson NY and Great Barrington MA.
Monday September 25th was the first day of the HR Rally. Registration and opening meeting at 4:00 PM There were eighteen couples in attendance. We have lots of activities lined up for the week.
Tuesday September 26th we caravanned to Hyde Park, NY where we visited the Vanderbilt Mansion which is located on the banks of the Hudson River and was very impressive considering this was only one of five they owned around the country. The Vanderbilt’s only used this home about three months a year.
After touring the Vanderbilt Mansion we stopped and had lunch before going on to the home of Franklin D. Roosevelt also at Hyde Park and on the Hudson. The visitors center and tour of the home and grounds were very interesting. We returned to the campground and had our social gathering. Later we had a campfire.
Wednesday we caravanned to Stockbridge MA and toured the Norman Rockwell Museum. The museum houses the world’s largest and most significant collection of original Rockwell art. Also on the grounds is the studio where Rockwell did most of his work. This was very interesting.
Thursday September 28th we went to the world famous Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY where we enjoyed a gourmet luncheon. The institute, which is the recognized leader in culinary education, was founded in 1946 in New Haven, CT; and was moved to its present campus in 1972. The college enrolls more than 2,400 students in its degree programs. Following the luncheon, we were treated to an excellent guided tour of the facilities, along with a detailed explanation of the programs being conducted in each of the kitchens. As an added treat, at least to some, was seeing Mickey and Vinnie from the TV show "American Chopper" filming a segment on the institute's front steps. "American Chopper" is a show about the building of custom motorcycles at their facility located in Orange County, NY.
Friday was a free day and I washed the roof of the motorhome and then visited with the neighbors. Later we went in to Copake which is a very nice small town and stopped at the United Methodist Church where my Uncle Gayle Miller was the pastor at one time. We then returned to the campground and had our 4 o’clock social and played cards.
Saturday After a nice pancake breakfast put on by the campground Sandy and I took a ride down to Kingston and Rhinebeck where we attended a large craft show. We returned to the campground in time for the 4 o’clock and then went for a pizza dinner with three other couples.
Sunday was spent visiting and walking around the campground until it was time to go to the Yorkshire Farms Restaurant and the farewell dinner scheduled at 6:30 PM. This was the final activity of the rally.
Monday October 2nd we left Copake and traveled north to Queensbury in the Lake George area.
Tuesday October 3rd we took a ride into Lake George which is located in some beautiful country. Later we rode down to Saratoga Springs and drove around Saratoga Lake.
Wednesday we left Lake George and traveled to Ives Run Campground at Tioga, PA which is one of our favorite local campgrounds.
Thursday October 5th we traveled on to Farragut and back with our family.
One of the reasons we went up to Lake George was to see how colorful the leaves were, but to our surprise the most beautiful leaves we saw on the whole trip were in PA from Tioga to Bloss Mountain.
