March 2007
3/4/07 Sunday we went to church service at the clubhouse. Later we went out to the desert near Yuma Proving Grounds and visited with Jim and Pat Heinrich friends who are spending the winter camping on BLM land near Imperial Dam. We met the Heinrich’s two years ago here in Yuma and met up with them again in Alaska in 2005. We went to dinner with them at the army base restaurant.
3/6/07 Tuesday we met Heinrich’s and went over to Algodones Mexico for the day. This is a fun town with lots of music, shopping and food. A good time was had by all.
Games in the clubhouse after dinner.
The next few days we stayed around the park most of the time. Sandy went to water aerobics in the mornings, we swam, took walks etc. It’s been in the mid eightys in the afternoons this week.
3/10/07 Sat we went to an air show at the Naval Facility in El Centro CA featuring the Blue Angels. This was a great show. The Clydesdales were there as well and they are always fun to see.
3/14/07 Wednesday We left Yuma and traveled to San Diego where we stayed at San Diego RV Resort in LaMesa CA. This is a real nice park located close to the metro train into San Diego.
Thursday we took the Metro train into old town San Diego and got tickets for the Old Town Trolley tour which took us to the state historic park, harbor cruise ship terminal, Coronado Island, San Diego Zoo and the US Naval Station Mirimar.
Friday we took the car and rode over to Coronado Island and walked around the shops then rode down the silver strand to Imperial Beach and Chula Vista to the border at Tijuana, MX.
Saturday we went back down to the Harbor and toured the Midway aircraft carrier which was very interesting. We then had dinner down town and returned to the campground.
3/18/07 Sunday we left San Diego and traveled north to Aguana CA and Jojoba Hills SKP Resort in the Palomar mountains. This is a super nice park about twenty miles east of Temecula.
Monday we went in to Temecula and Mureieta and went to Walmart and got groceries and prescriptions We returned to park and attended the 4 o’clock.
3/22/07 Wednesday we took a ride over the mountains to Palm Springs and did some window shopping. The streets are named after their more famous residents Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Gearld Ford and Dinah Shore to name a few. This is a pretty swanky town and it was a beautiful ride over the mountains.
3/25/07 We left Jojoba Hills and moved north to Castaic CA and Castaic Lake RV Park.
3/26/07 Monday We rode down to Simi Valley and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. This is a great tribute to Pres. Reagan with a beautiful building filled with all the mementos of his life from college, radio announcer, actor governor and finally President of the United States. The library is located on a hill surrounded by beautiful scenery. The library has a section that contains Air Force One and the presidential helicopter as well.
The library and grounds blend beautifully with the surrounding area and are very tastefully done.
3/27/07 we left Castaic and headed north on I-5 over what is called the Grapevine which is about 6,000 ft in altitude. The sun was shining when we left Castaic, but when we got about fifteen miles up the mountain it started getting dark and before long it was snowing like there was no tomorrow with very poor visibility. By the time we got to the bottom of the mountain the sun was shinning again. This seems to be an example of mountain driving in the west. We traveled on north to Bakersfield CA and Bakersfield Palms RV Resort.
3/28/07 we went east to Tehachapi CA and had lunch with Carlene Reeder who lives in
Tehachapi. We had a nice but short visit with Carlene. Returning to Bakersfield we
stopped on the mountain at the Tehachapi Loop which is a loop in the railroad to help the
trains gain altitude climbing the mountain. It was neat to watch the trains circle
themselves going up the mountain. This loop was built in 1875 and is still in use today.
3/29/07 Thursday we went to the Buck Owens Crystal Palace. Buck Owens was famous for what is known as the Bakersfield sound. Some of the artists known for this sound and probably the most famous is Dwight Youcum.
We then took a ride north up toward Porterville past lots of oil wells vineyards and cattle ranches.
3/30/07 we left Bakersfield and traveled north through Fresno to Coarsegold CA in the foothills of the Sierras and the SKP Park of the Sierras. This is another beautiful Escapees Park with lots of friendly people.
3/31/07 Saturday We went to the clubhouse for breakfast of sausage gravy and biscuits with all the trimmings. We then went up into Yosemite Nat’l Park. where we saw groves of giant sequoia trees, Bridal Vail falls, El Capitan etc. what beautiful country.
Sunday we did our cleaning and maintenance. We ate dinner at home, then went to the ice cream social at the clubhouse.
