July 2004
Saturday June 26th we left Draper and traveled to Wells, NV. On the way we passed the Great Salt Lake and the Bonneville Salt Flats. In Wells we stayed overnight at a small campground surrounded with some beautiful scenery, snowcapped mountains to the south and high desert on the north with more mountains in the distance. While taking a walk around the campground I kicked up an antelope in the sagebrush.
Sunday AM. we moved on west to Fernley NV, just east of Reno and stayed in a very nice park. Monday we took the car and drove into Carson City, the capital of Nevada. And also went to Virginia City, the gold mining town, which has been restored and is now a tourist attraction. On the way back to Fernley we witnessed our first dust storm. At first we thought it was smoke in the distance, but soon found out what it was. The dust was so thick you could hardly see through it. (like bad fog in PA).
Tuesday June 29thwe crossed the border into California and stopped in Redding, CA for the night. Wednesday we traveled west on Rt. 299 through the mountains, 150 miles of up and down and around S curves with 6 and 8% grades. Saw some beautiful mountains. We arrived in Trinidad CA at 3:00 PM. And stopped at the first campground we saw that looked OK. It wasn’t so good so Thursday morning we went up through the redwoods to Crescent City CA and found a real nice park located right in town and right across the street from the ocean. On the way we saw our first elk, a small herd right along the road. We will stay here over the holiday weekend. We will check out the redwoods and walk the beaches while here.
On the 4th the campground sponsored a potluck dinner at noon and furnished the meat and beverage. There was a nice turnout and a lot of good food. In the evening the town set off one of the nicest fireworks displays we have ever seen.
July 5th we left Crescent City and moved up the coast to Winchester Bay, OR and stayed at the Marina RV Resort where we had a waterfront site facing the marina on Winchester Bay. This is a beautiful campground with lots of fishing and crabbing.
Tuesday July 6th we took a ride up the coast where there is an area with very large sand dunes. Some of these dunes are used by ATVs and some are off limits.
There is also an area east of town where elk come in and feed on a regular basis. There were about fifteen bulls right along the road when we were there, with probably thirty cows and calves further back in the fields.
Wednesday July 7th we moved inland to Sutherlin OR to get out of the cold ocean wind. We are staying at the Escapee Park. While we are here we will catch up on housecleaning and laundry again.
