Clair & Sandy's Home Away From Home
June 2005

June 10th 9:00 am we said good bye to Michelle, Chelsea and our two favorite black labs and were on our way to Alaska, three weeks after our original departure date. We traveled as far as Mercer PA by 2:30 when we encountered a thunderstorm so we pulled into a campground just off I-80 for the night.

Sat, June 11th we traveled to Elkhart IN and stayed at the Elkhart Campground just off I-80. Sunday we went to the local Camping World store and picked up a few items we wanted for the motorhome. We spent the afternoon installing new purchases.

Monday, June 13th we left Elkhart at 9:00 am and traveled to Spring Green WI., arriving about 6:00 PM. We normally don’t travel that far in a day, but it just worked out that way.

Tuesday, June 14th we toured the House on Rock that Clair Lockard told us about. It’s truly amazing, everything and more than Clair said it was. The man that built this complex certainly had a vision. The house built right on the rocks is impressive enough, but when you look at the displays of all the things he collected from all over the world it takes a full day to go thru it all. There are cars, trucks, steam engines, marine relics, home furnishings and the worlds largest carousel to name a few.

Day 6 Wednesday, June 15th we left Spring Green at 9:00 am and traveled to Menomonie WI arriving at 4:30 pm where we spent the night.

Day 7 Thursday we traveled to Bloomington MN just south of Minneapolis and the home of the Mall of America said to be the largest enclosed mall in the US. We spent the afternoon walking the mall, which includes 520 stores.

Friday, June 17th we decided to spend another day in the area and went back to the mall. When we returned we cleaned house and washed the motorhome.

Saturday, June 18th we traveled west to Jamestown ND. Arriving at 5:45 pm and stayed at Frontier Fort Campground.

Sunday we did laundry and walked over to the neighboring Frontier Town of Yesterday, home of the worlds largest buffalo, (a concrete sculpture). It is a nice set up of a typical frontier town.

Monday, June 20th we moved on west to Bismarck, ND where we visited Abraham Lincoln State Park which was actually Fort Abraham Lincoln, Gen. Custer’s last command. There is Custer’s house an some of the barracks and the stables still standing. It was very interesting. On the way back to the campground we drove past the state capitol in Bismarck. The capitol building is known as the Skyscraper on the Prairie.

Tuesday June 21st we traveled north to Minot, ND where we will get our mail. On the way to Minot we stopped at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center which has a very nice display of Corps of Discovery and their expedition. Also located nearby is Fort Mandan on the bank of the Missouri River where Lewis and Clark spent the winter of 1804-05. It really shows how hard life was for members of the corps.

Wednesday we checked for mail, (not here yet) and went to Wal-Mart to stock up on a few things.

Thursday June 23rd we got our mail and did some laundry. In the afternoon we took a ride and did some more sightseeing.

Friday we traveled north to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan where we stayed at the Prairie Oasis Campground.

Saturday June 25th we traveled to Saskatoon SK and stayed at the 16 West RV Park. In the afternoon we went in town to Western Development Museum which had some great displays and was very interesting.

Sunday June 26th we left Saskatoon and traveled 342 miles to Edmonton, SK where we stayed at the Glowing Embers RV Park. Monday we toured the West Edmonton Mall said to be the largest mall in the world with over 800 stores. The mall also has a water park and an amusement park all under one roof.

Tuesday, June 28th we traveled to Grande Prairie, SK and stayed at Tamarack RV Park. Grande Prairie is a booming town of over 40,000 people. It has a strong economy based on agriculture, logging/lumber mills and oil and gas.

Wednesday, June 29th we traveled to Dawson Creek, BC where we stayed at Tubby’s Campground. In the afternoon we walked around downtown Dawson Creek and went to the welcome center and museum. We also took pictures of the mile “0” Alaska sign. We met some people at Tubby’s who were with a Winnebago caravan to Alaska. We would run into them numerous times going up the Alcan.

Thursday June 30th we left Tubby’s and traveled north to Fort Nelson, BC where we stayed at the Blue Bell RV Park. On the way we took the loop road on a section of the original Alaska Highway and the curved wooden bridge spanning the Kiskatinaw river. This is the only wooden bridge still in use on the Alaska highway. We saw two bucks and a black bear on our way to Fort Nelson.
