July 2005
Friday, July 1st we left Fort Nelson at 8:00 am where the highway winds through the northern Canadian Rockies which are densely forested with many vistas. We had a good day seeing wildlife. We saw another black bear, a bull moose, a group of caribou and two different groups of dall sheep. We passed by Summit Lake which is the highest point on the Alaska Highway. We arrived at J & H Wilderness Resort at Muncho Lake, BC. Muncho Lake is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful lakes in the world with its clear blue green water. We had showers off and on all day.

Saturday, July 2nd we left Muncho Lake at 9:30 am (rain again this morning), and traveled to Watson Lake YT. Arriving at 3:00 pm. We went to the sign post forest at the visitors center and started looking for the sign from Montoursville. Sandy found one within fifteen minutes, which isn’t easy when you have 54,000 signs to look at. The sign thing started way back when they were building the Alaska highway during World War II and a homesick GI put up a sign pointing the way and stating the mileage to his home town. Others have been doing the same ever since. We also watched a film on building the highway at the info center.

Sunday July 3rd we left Watson Lake at 9:00 am and traveled to Teslin YT where we stayed at Mukluk Annie’s where you camp free and get a boat ride on Teslin Lake when you buy a meal from the salmon bake menu. John Brass and Newt had told us about this and it was great. The people who own this place are really nice folks and have a super operation. The scenery up here is impossible to describe.

Monday, July 4th we left Mukluk Annie’s at 9:00 am and traveled to Whitehorse YT where we stayed at the Pioneer Campground. In the afternoon we went downtown and did our grocery shopping and sightseeing.
Tuesday, July 5th our 2nd day at Whitehorse we went to the welcome center and saw a nice film on the history of the area. We then went to the transportation museum.
Wednesday, July 6th we left Whitehorse and traveled north to Dawson City famous for the gold rush of the Yukon. On our way we stopped at the Braeburn Lodge on the Klondike Highway and had one of their famous cinnamon buns that will feed four people. We were eating that one bun for two days. We arrived at Dawson City at 6:00 pm and stayed at the Bonanza Gold RV Park.
Thursday, July 7th we took a ride up to Midnight Dome elev. 2900’ and overlooks Dawson City and the Yukon River. Great view. We then went down town and walked the streets and went to the visitor’s center. We then went back to the campground and panned for gold and then had the gold we panned put in a locket for Sandy. (It’s a tourist thing).

In the evening we went back in town and attended the can can show at Diamond Tooth Gerties Casino. Very good show and Sandy got to try the slots. Didn’t do well.
Friday, July 8th Left the campground at 9:30 am and went to the ferry where we put the motorhome and car on the ferry and crossed the Yukon and on to the Top of the World Highway. What a road! Beautiful view the road is above timberline most of the way to the Alaska line. We crossed the border at Boundary AK. From Boundary the road was terrible for the next fifty miles or so. The next town we came to was Chicken where we stopped for lunch. This is indescribly beautiful country. We went through the burned areas where the wildfires of 2004 burned over a million acres. We couldn’t have come through here last year because of the fires. We arrived at Tok RV Village in Tok, AK at 5:30 pm with a very dirty motorhome and car.

Saturday, July 9th we cleaned the car and motorhome and looked around town. We went to Fast Eddies restaurant for dinner and I found a little book store where I can get on the internet. Later we went to the entertainment at the campground.
Sunday, July 10th we will do more cleaning and sightseeing. We have to wait until Monday for the Post Office to open to get our mail. We will then head on up to Fairbanks.
