July 2006
Wednesday July 5th we departed Farragut and traveled to Brennan Beach RV Resort at Pulaski NY. While here we visited the Salmon Creek museum and fish hatchery near Pulaski. This is a favorite salmon fishing river in the northeast.
Saturday July 8th we traveled to Massena NY where we stayed at Massena Int’l Kampground located on the St. Laurence River.
Sunday we went over to the Eisenhower Locks on the St. Laurence Seaway where we watched three ships pass through the locks. It’s fascinating to see how they raise and lower these large ships forty feet to pass to and from the Atlantic to the great lakes.
Monday July 10th we traveled to the Plattsburg NY area and the Twin Ells Campground near Lake Champlain.
Tuesday we went in to the lake where Bassmaster’s were holding a fishing tournament on the lake. We stayed and watched the fishermen come in after their practice sessions with their fancy boats all painted and lettered with their sponsors names etc.
Wednesday July 12th we traveled around to the Vermont side of Lake Champlain to Shelburne Campground south of Burlington.
Thursday we went into Burlington to the historic downtown waterfront where we had lunch and watched the boats. In the afternoon we stopped at “Country Curtains” headquarters. We then went to Shelburne museum where there are many nice historic exhibits including the steamboat Ticonderoga, a vintage carousel and much more.
Friday July 14th we traveled east to Waterbury VT. and Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory and did the tour. We then traveled on to Concord VT. and Rustic Haven Campground. As we were pulling into our site we spotted Bob and Donna Cole fellow escapees we had last seen in Livingston TX. We had a nice visit with them.
Sunday July 16th we traveled on to New Hampshire and down through the White Mountains past Mt. Washington the highest peak in the northeast at 6,288 feet and stopped at North Conway NH. where we stayed at the Beach Camping Area Campground.
Monday we toured around the area and took a train ride on the Conway Valley Railroad.
Tuesday July 18th we drove over to Fryeburg ME and the Holiday Rambler Int’l Rally.
We met a lot of people we knew from meeting them around the country. We also went through the vendor displays and looked at the new 2007 model Holiday Ramblers on display. We attended the Chapter 400 4 o’clock gathering.
Wednesday we were back visiting with more HR people and looking at all the goodies the vendors were selling. We met some people from central PA who are in Chapter 63 Susquehanna Valley Chapter which is the local chapter for us. We had a nice visit with them and joined the chapter.
Thursday July 19th we left the Freyburg area and traveled to Hermon, ME (Bangor area) and the Pumpkin Patch RV Resort. This turned out to be one of the nicest campgrounds we have found to date. It is a well run resort with great, friendly staff.
We had a pleasant surprise when we found we were parked near Bob and Donna Cole again. We really weren’t following them purposely. We went to dinner with them and had some great lobster.
Friday we took a drive down to Bar Harbor and Cadillac Mountain. We walked the streets and browsed the shops of Bar Harbor.
Saturday July21st we went down town into Bangor and walked along the waterfront of the Penobscot River. They have transformed their waterfront into a beautiful park.
We had dinner at the campgrounds neighboring Hermon Family Restaurant.
Sunday and Monday we cleaned the motorhome and car, did laundry and looked around the area.
Tuesday July 25th we went to the Cole Land Transportation Museum which has a very nice collection of every mode of land transportation vehicle including a early diesel electric locomotive, trucks of every description, tractors, motorcycles, snowmobiles, military vehicles and World War I and II memorabilia.
In the evening we went to the campground ice cream social.
Wednesday we took a ride up to Moosehead Lake located in the beautiful mountains of Maine. We had lunch in Greenville and looked through some of the shops in town. We saw our first Maine moose (a young bull) on our way home.
Thursday we did more laundry and cleaning. We had a 4 o’clock social with Bob and Marie Smith Chapter 400 Holiday Ramblers who came into the park. We then had dinner at Hermon Family Restaurant.
Friday July 28th we took a ride down the coast through Ellsworth and Bucksport where International Paper has a huge plant. There is also a new bridge (Waldo-Hancock Bridge) being built across the Penobscot River at Bucksport. This is a big suspension bridge with an observation deck built into one of the supporting towers. It was pizza night at the park.
Sunday July 30th we left the Pumpkin Patch and traveled north to Katahdin Shadows RV Park in Medway, ME. In the evening we took ride on some back roads and saw a cow moose in a bog just off the road.
Monday we rode up to Baxter State Park which is a forested area of nearly 205,000 acres including Mt. Katahdin at 5,268 feet making it Maines highest mountain. This is a beautiful area and a real nice park. They only allow so many people at a time to go back into the ponds where the moose are prevalent. We received our pass at 1:00 PM and drove into Sandy Stream Pond where we walked in approximately two miles. After about thirty minutes we saw a nice cow come out of the woods across the lake and start to swim towards our side of the lake. It was almost like it was scripted as she finally ended up within twenty yard of where we and four other people were watching. She put on a great show for us and it was well worth the walk.
