January 2007
1/1/07 We took a ride down to Terlingua near the Mexican border. In the evening we went to the New Years potluck at the campground.
1/2/07 We left Alpine and traveled to Lakewood NM and the Escapee’s Ranch RV Park.
This is a beautiful park and is like an oasis in the desert and is filled with very friendly people.
1/3-8/07 While at the Ranch we went into Carlsbad and got groceries and had the car serviced. We then went to the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens which has all the plants and animals common to the area. We went back to the Ranch for the four o’clock and found that Pat and Dave McCarthy had arrived in the park. We had met them in Hondo earlier.
The next day we took a ride over to Hobbs NM to visit a western museum we had heard about. When we arrived the museum was closed for construction. It was a nice ride and we saw lots and lots of oil wells in that area. This is the oil hot spot of New Mexico.
The following day we took a ride to Artesia NM which is a small town surrounded by pecan farms, oil wells and cattle ranches.
1/9/07 We left the Ranch and traveled west through Cloudcroft to Alamogordo NM and the White Sands Community RV Park. In the afternoon we went to the White Sands Nat’l Monument which is one of the world’s great natural wonders. Wave like dunes of gypsum sand engulf 275 sq. miles of desert.
1/10/07 Wednesday We went to the New Mexico Museum of Space History which has many exhibits of missiles dating from very early to present. We also went to the Imax theatre and saw a movie on going to the planet Mars.
1/11/07 We left Alamogordo and traveled to the Dream Catcher RV Park in Deming NM.
1/12-14/07 Friday we went to Walmart for haircuts and groceries. We then went to Rockhound State Park and looked at the exhibits.
Saturday we went to the St Clair Winery then returned to park and did laundry. We then went to the four o’clock social where we met a couple from England who have been touring the US in their motorhome fo the past year.
Sunday we went to Columbus NM and Pancho Villa State Park and Museum. This gives a very interesting history of the attack on the town and area by Villa and his troops.
1/15/07 Monday we left Deming and traveled to Benson AZ and the Saguaro SKP Co-Op RV Park. In the evening Kathy Bender and Pat Wiseman from PA came over to visit.
Kathy moved from PA to Pearce AZ and has a job on a guest ranch and Pat is out here visiting for a week.
1/16/07 We did routine cleaning and maintenance in the morning and went to the four o’clock social. We then met Kathy and Pat for Pizza in Benson.
1/17/07 We met Kathy and Pat at Sunsites and had breakfast and then went to Douglas and went across the border to Aqua Perieta, Mexico and did some window shopping.
We then went to Bisbee and Tombstone where we had lunch and looked through the shops.
1/18/07 We picked Pat up at Sunsites and went back to Tombstone and had a good time doing all the tourist stuff.
1/19/07 We picked Pat up again and went to Sierra Vista AZ and Coranado Nat’l Monument, which is a beautiful drive with great views into Mexico.
1/20/07 Sat. We had breakfast with Kathy and Pat and then went to Tucson and the Saguaro Nat’l Park and the Arizona Sonara Desert Museum then had dinner in Benson.
1/22/07 We went to breakfast with Pat and Kathy then Kathy went to treatment for her sore leg and the rest of us went to Kartchner Caverns State Park. We then met Kathy for dinner. Over night it got very cold for AZ thirty degrees and snowed about a half inch.
1/23/07 Tue. Sandy and I took Pat to the airport in Tucson for her return to PA. We had a great time touring with Pat and Kathy. We then went to CVS and got my prescriptions filled then went to Camping World and got some supplies.
1/24/07 We went over to Apache Station Wildlife area where we saw several hundred Sandhill Cranes. While there a man told us about a large cattle farm nearby, so we drove over there and it was one of the largest complex of cattle barns I have ever seen and it’s in the middle of the desert. You just never know what you will see around the bend.
1/27/07 Sat We went to Wilcox and visited the Rex Allen Cowboy Museum. Rex Allen never forgot his hometown and returned every year for a reunion celebration. Wilcox was once known as the “Cattle Capitol of the World.” We then went down to the Chiricahua Nat’l Monument. This is a beautiful area with rock formations and high mountains. They had just re-opened the road to the top of the mountain as there was about eighteen inches of snow up on top when we were there.
Sunday we did laundry and washed the motorhome and went out for dinner.
