We saw the Columbia and Meares glaciers, wildlife, sea lions, sea otters, harbor seals, a whale, bald eagles, horned puffins, loon’s, the Alyeska pipeline terminal, and a salmon hatchery. A great trip! It was a rainy day, but didn’t interfere with our trip. We saw several glaciers calving which was very interesting to see.

Friday, August 5, Third day at Eagle’s Rest RV Park, Valdez, AK. Went down town Valdez, and watched two videos, at the museum. Valdez history and earthquake and the pipeline. Took a ride to Old Town Valdez. Went to view the spawning salmon area. Saw lots of fish. Walked down to the harbor, saw six salmon sharks 90”long 200 lbs. Went to Mikes Place for a halibut supper.
Saturday, August 6, Fourth day at Eagle’s Rest RV Park. We took a ride down to Valdez glacier. Then to the Worthington glacier out at Thompson pass. Later we went down to the harbor in Valdez and walked around to see the fish the fishermen brought in. It was awesome to see so many big fish.

Sunday, August 7, Left Eagle’s Rest, Valdez, AK. and traveled to Glennallen, AK and the Northern Nights RV Park.
Monday August 8th I got my prescriptions filled at the pharmacy in town and then we left for Tok, AK and Tok RV Village. This puts us back on the Alaska Highway. As we neared Tok we saw a nice moose in the middle of a pond along the road. In the evening we went up to the campground pavilion and listened to the entertainment which were two men and a lady. They were very enjoyable to listen to.
Tuesday August 9th, Our second day at Tok. We rode around on some back roads looking for wildlife. We didn’t see any animals but the scenery was great. In the evening we went to the entertainment again.
Wednesday August 10th we left Tok and traveled toward Whitehorse. We stopped at Kluane Wilderness Village. This section of road was the worst we encountered since the Top of the World road. There were many frost heaves and areas of construction, so by the time we reached Kluane we were ready to call it a day.
Thursday August 11th it was another beautiful day sunny and 84 degrees. We left Kluane Wilderness Village and traveled on to Whitehorse YT. The road was slightly better, but this whole section from Tok to Haines Junction is by far the worst section on the Alaska Highway.
Friday August 12th, We took a ride on some of the back roads around Whitehorse and stopped at the hydroelectric dam and fish ladder, the largest wooden fish ladder in the world built to allow spawning salmon to get over the dam.
Saturday August 13th , We went on a bus train tour to Skagway over the White Pass and Yukon route. This is some spectacular scenery out of the train windows. While in Skagway we saw the cruise ships and did the gift shops and had lunch at the Red Onion.
We got back to the campground at 6:30 pm.

Sunday August 14th , We left Whitehorse at 9:00am and traveled to Watson Lake at 3:30pm. We stopped at Mukluk Annie’s for lunch.

Monday August 15th , we left Watson Lake and traveled to Blue Bell RV Park in Fort Nelson, BC. We saw lots of wildlife on our way, bear, buffalo, deer, wild horses, mountain goats etc. We also saw more road construction.

Tuesday August 16th, we left Fort Nelson at 9:00am and traveled to Dawson Creek, BC Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway. We can now say “we drove the Alaska Highway both ways and survived.” We stayed at Northern Lights RV Park in Dawson Creek which was a little roomier than most parks we had been staying in.
Wednesday August 17th, we went for a ride around town and checked out fuel prices. The best we found was $.88.9 which is $3.36 US.
Thursday August 18th, we left Dawson Creek and traveled to Grande Cache AB. where we stayed at the municipal campground which was very nice. We decided while we were this close we will visit the Jasper and Banff area in the Canadian Rockies. And then on to Calgary.
Friday August 19th, we traveled to Hinton AB where we stayed at the Hinton/Jasper KOA. We took a ride in to Jasper and checked out the Tramway which takes you to the top of the mountain overlooking Jasper. We saw lots of goats and some elk on our way to Jasper.
Saturday August 20th, we did more sightseeing. We took a ride up to Maligne Lake. This area is really beautiful also. We saw several groups of goats on the road and a beautiful bull elk. Maligne Lake is about thirty miles up in the Canadian Rockies.

Sunday August 21st We left Hinton at 9:00 am and traveled down the Icefields Parkway from Jasper thru the Columbia Icefields and Banff. This is spectacular scenery with the glaciers and snow capped mountains and the glacial river. We traveled as far as Canmore AB where we stopped at Spring Mountain Village RV Park.
Monday August 22nd We Left Canmore and traveled to Calgary where we stayed at Pine Creek RV Park. In the afternoon we took a ride down town and looked around. Calgary is a booming town.
Tuesday August 23rd We left Calgary and traveled south to Great Falls MT. arriving at 3:30 pm. We are staying at Dicks RV Park which is very nice, the best we have been in for a long time.
Wednesday August 24th we went downtown and looked around, then went to WalMart and got stocked up on groceries. We also made an appointment to get the motorhome serviced. When we got back to the campground we washed the motorhome.
Thursday August 25th we went to the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and then to the museum at Malstrom Air Force Base which is now a Minuteman Missile Base. Both were very interesting.
Friday August 26th we got the motorhome serviced in the morning and had a new toilet installed in the afternoon. In between Mom got her hair cut.
Saturday August 27th we did laundry and I started cleaning the storage bays in the motorhome. They accumulated a lot of dust and dirt from the dirt roads in Alaska. We are taking a few days here to catch up on cleaning and relaxing. The weather and accommodations here are great and it makes it a great place to spend a few days.
We talked to Lenny Hinton and Sally Kuhns from home and they are staying over in Sula and invited us over to visit. We may do that when we leave here.
Sunday August 28th It’s another beautiful day. 90 degrees. We took a ride up to Fort Benton on the Missouri River. We took a walk on the first bridge to span the Missouri.
Fort Benton is a nice little town with a lot of history. It was pretty wild in the 1800’s. They ran steamships up as far as Fort Benton until the railroads came in in the 1880s.
Monday August 29th Its another nice day. We cleaned the car inside and out and Sandy gave me a haircut. In the afternoon we went to Wal-Mart and stocked up on groceries.
Tuesday August 30th we left Great Falls and moved south to Helena where we stayed at Lincoln Road RV Park. We went downtown and looked at the capitol buildings. The city is very nice. We called Lenny and Sally again and told them we wouldn’t be able to travel over there and visit this time but would like a rain check. It was too far west to go over there and visit for a few days and then start back east.
Wednesday August 31st we left Helena and traveled east to Big Timber, MT. where we stayed at a beautiful RV park on the Boulder river and parked right on the river bank.
This is where they filmed the movie “The Horse Whisperer” staring Robert Redford.
We went in town and visited the Shilo Sharps Rifle Factory which was very interesting.
We then had a late lunch in town. Big Timber is a neat little town with a western flair.
Just before dusk we took a ride up past the RV park about twenty miles to Natural Bridge State Park. On the way back to the campground we saw approximately 200 deer in the alfalfa fields along the road It was amazing to see so many. There were at least a dozen nice bucks. Then to top it off we came around a turn and Sandy spotted some elk crossing the river. We stopped and we watched at least thirty-five elk cross the river. There were some real nice bulls with them. We sure hit the jackpot by deciding to spend the night at Big Timber. You just never know what you will see.
