Clair & Sandy's Home Away From Home
April 2007

4/1/07 We spent the next few days touring the Yosemite area and the vineyards trail near the park. We had lunch a couple of times at the nearby Chuckchansi Casino which is very good and very affordable.

4/5/07 Thursday we went to Sequoia and Kings Canyon Nat’l Park where we saw the giant trees and more spectacular views of canyons, high peaks and beautiful sights of the Sierras.

Sequoia National Park

4/7/07 We went to the casino for our forty-fifth wedding anniversary dinner. We then went to the slots and played for awhile. Needless to say we didn’t hit it big.

4/8/07, Sunday, Easter and Clair’s birthday. We had a nice dinner at home with a special bunny cake. Lloyd and Bert Christiansen arrived at the park today. We went to the ice cream social with them.

The next few days we spent sightseeing and visiting with Lloyd and Bert and playing games in the clubhouse in the evenings.

4/12/07 Thursday was the first day of the parks Stagecoach Days celebration. This includes meals, games and entertainment. It’s so named from the fact the park is built on the former Butterfield Stage Coach trail. Thursday evening we found that Dale and Cathy Chadsey from British Columbia, friends we had met a couple of years ago had arrived in the park. We had two more people at the game table and a nice visit.

We have had a great time at Park Sierra visiting with old friends and making new ones. Monday night we played Mexican Train with Christiansens, Chadseys and Bernie and Carole Patton. We have been at Park Sierra for eighteen days. Tomorrow will be time to start east.

4/20/07 Friday we went to the Grand Canyon. We took the shuttle from the visitors center which stops at various viewpoints along the canyon. (you are not allowed to drive your own vehicle past a certain point) This is the second time we have been here and it’s just as awesome this time as it was the first time. This time after leaving the main park we drove east along the rim and stopped at some other less visited viewpoints. We then headed back to Flagstaff and stopped at Sunset Crater Nat’l Monument. This is a fairly recent volcanic action and gives you an up close view of the lava spill.

4/21/07 Saturday we took a ride down through the red rock country to Sedona and on to Cottonwood. We can see why everyone says how beautiful this area is. At Cottonwood we stopped at Tuzigoot Nat’l Monument which is a 800 year old Indian ruin. It was very interesting. From Cottonwood we traveled on west through the old copper and silver mining town of Jerome. Jerome is an artist’s and tourist Mecca today. The town is built on a very steep mountainside.

Tuzigoot

From Jerome we went on over to Prescott to meet Kathy Bender for dinner. Kathy just moved to Prescott from Benson a week ago. We had dinner at Applebee’s and had a nice visit. Kathy is working in a natural food store and deli. After dinner we returned to Flagstaff.

4/22/07 Sunday we left Flagstaff and moved east to Holbrook AZ and the OK RV Park. In the afternoon we went out to the Painted Desert Nat’l Monument which is part of the Petrified Forrest Nat’l Park. The twenty eight mile park road has many vistas that overlook rock formations of various colors and hues.

Monday we went to the Petrified Forest where we stopped at the visitor’s center and went on a walking tour with one of the rangers. From there we went through the rest of the park which is home to colorful petrified wood, fossils. Petroglyphs and wildlife including large herds of antelope.

4/26/07 Thursday we left Albuquerque and traveled east to Amarillo TX and the Wonderland RV Park. We took a ride down through town and looked things over. It looks like it’s a booming town.

4/27/07 Friday we moved on east to Oklahoma City OK and Twin Fountains RV Park. This is a beautiful new park located near the interstate. They had not even had their grand opening yet when we were here. A neighbor in the RV park in Albuquerque told me about it.

Saturday we went to the National Cowboy and western heritage museum. This is a great display of our western heritage and culture. The displays include western performers gallery, firearms, western wear and gear, native American wear and gear. They also had a nice display of western and native American art. This museum is second only to the Buffalo Bill museum in Cody, WY.

4/29/07 Sunday we went downtown to the Oklahoma City Memorial and museum. This was very moving as there were so many involved, killed, injured or left behind. The memorial is very nicely laid out on the very ground the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building stood.

Oklahoma City Memorial

4/30/07 We left Oklahoma City and traveled east to Branson Mo. And Turkey Creek RV Village. We had a front tire blowout on I 44 just east of Joplin MO. We called road service and had a new tire installed before we could continue on to Branson. The blown tire caused damage to the front fender panel and one airbag and some wiring located in the wheel well.

Turkey Creek RV Village Blow Out

After that experience we decided to replace all the tires as they are over five years old and we don’t want any more blowouts. We found that none of the tire dealers in the area stocked the tires we wanted and it would take a week to get them in up in Springfield.

If you have to wait for something, Branson is as good a place as any. We had to attend some shows and do some shopping to pass the time.

One day we went to the new Branson Landing Mall which is built on the shore of Lake Taneycomo and includes a Bass Pro Shop on one end and a large Department store on the other and about forty smaller stores in between.

5/11/07 Friday we left Branson and went up to Springfield and had our new tires installed. We then headed east to Villa Ridge MO just west of St.Louis where we stopped for the night.
